Internet Worms
An Internet Worm is a malicious program that can automatically spread through the Internet by itself. Requiring no work by attackers to spread it, an Internet worm can replicate itself and move across networks. Even if the worm does not carry a payload to execute other malicious actions, the spreading of the worm itself can consume a huge amount of bandwidth, slowing down computer systems.
The first worm was an 'intellectual excercise' by Robert Tappan Morris, then a student at Cornell University. The 'Morris Worm' as it came to be known exploited vulnerabilities in the Unix operating system and resulted in infected computers slowing down until they were unusable.
